Sunday 8/15 I preached on Mark 1:;21&22 "Astonishing Teaching". Jesus teaches in the synagogue and they are astonished at this teaching for two reasons:

1.) They noted that Jesus "..taught with authority, not as the scribes...", and that authority was based on his knowledge of the scriptures. A young boy of 12 years old doesn't sit in the Temple asking and answering questions with the scholars based on a lifetime of reading Superman Comics and playing Nintendo games. He was familiar and intimate with the Bible. He had read and meditated on those things. When he corrects the Sadducees over the question of the resurrection he says "Ye do err, knowing not the scriptures nor the power of God."

2.) The second astonishing feature of his teaching is found in this statement "What new doctrine (teaching) is this? For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him." He did not teach theorys or high ideals but taught the word of God and was ready at a moments notice to put it into practice. When a demon manifests itself in the synagogue he simply casts it out of the man. How different than the dry teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees who spent their time splitting hairs and quibbling over interpretations.
